Hazard, KY, April 26, 2017 — Whitesburg ARH Hospital and Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center have been awarded the Hurst Gold Standard of Nursing by Hurst Review Services, one of the largest providers of nursing analytics in the nation. This award is given to healthcare facilities nationally who have achieved the highest level of nursing care.

“We are extremely pleased to have been singled out as one of the few facilities in the nation to achieve weighted scores for outstanding patient care,” said Dena Sparkman, CEO at Whitesburg ARH Hospital. “We know the exceptional care patients receive at our facility and it is wonderful to be recognized by an outside organization.”

Whitesburg ARH Hospital and Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center are part of the Appalachian Regional Healthcare, a 11-hospital health system serving 350,000 residents across Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia.

“We have always felt the nursing team at Tug Valley was laser focused on providing exceptional nursing care,” said Paula M. Vaughan, RN, MSN and Community Chief Nursing Officer of Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center. “We enjoy a solid reputation of excellence as a patient-oriented and community-centered healthcare provider.” “Our nurses deserve this high level of recognition.”

The quality indicators used to define the Hurst Gold Standard of Nursing include patients’ perceptions of nursing clinical skills, communication skills, prompt responsiveness to needs, friendliness and courtesy, and attitudes and attention paid to special or personal requests.

Hospital nursing staffs that achieve the highest ratings in the nursing-specific quality indicators are presented with the Hurst Gold Standard of Nursing Award. The award acknowledges contributions to excellence in healthcare, and the seal represents a sign of assurance for patients and their families of the gold-standard nursing care they can expect at a Hurst-recognized facility.

“As experienced nurses, the Hurst Review Services team knows the hard work and dedication it takes to achieve the highest standards of patient care,” says Marlene Hurst, RN MS CCRN ANP-C and founder of Hurst Review Services about the award. “We felt it was time to acknowledge the contribution nurses make to quality health care each day.”

Joe Grossman, President and CEO of Appalachian Regional Healthcare, noted that both the Whitesburg and Tug Valley facilities routinely exhibit an above and beyond attitude within the nursing ranks. “Those nurses execute everything we strive to accomplish here at ARH, putting patient care first. We are especially honored since this award is based on data collected nationally. My congratulations to our nurses at Tug Valley and Whitesburg!”
