ARH PHARMACY RESIDENCY
The Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency program offered by Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) at Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center is a twelve month post PharmD training program.
ARH Pharmacy Residency Program
This program in following the guidelines and accreditation standards of ASHP for PGY1 Pharmacy Residency programs places emphasis on the practice of pharmaceutical care and involves a full-time practice commitment. The residency begins in early July and should take at least twelve months to complete.

The pharmacy residency is defined as “an organized, directed, postgraduate training program that centers on development of the knowledge and experience needed to face challenges in today’s complex health-care environment, while providing skills to meet the practice demands of the future.”
Through various patient care, practice management and pharmaceutical practice learning experiences, the residency instills a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept that pharmacists must be responsible and accountable for optimum drug therapy outcomes.
The pharmacy residency is predicated on development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills required to develop the resident’s competence to provide pharmaceutical care as a generalist. In order to provide training in all aspects of contemporary pharmacy practice, the resident shall complete organized learning experiences that provide training and develop competence.
The pharmacy residency shall provide opportunities to further develop the resident’s competence in the three practice areas cited previously while completing various required and elective learning experiences.

Purpose
The purpose of this residency program is to provide educational and training experiences for pharmacists in the fundamentals of contemporary pharmacy practice within an integrated health care system to produce a generalist with advanced skills in leadership, communication, and mentorship.
Leadership
Pharmacy administrative practice learning experiences will allow the resident to ascertain leadership skills from the Clinical Coordinator, Director of Pharmacy and System Director of Pharmacy. During the pharmacy practice learning experiences, the resident will learn about supervising technical staff and directing the workflow of a busy institutional pharmacy. Opportunities exist for the resident to participate in departmental leadership, develop policies, procedures and clinical guidelines, and represent the pharmacy department on multi-disciplinary teams.
Communication
The resident’s communication skills will be continually assessed and critiqued throughout each learning experience. The resident will gain experience with writing policies and protocols, contribute to the pharmacy newsletter, and develop educational materials for various audiences. Opportunities for improvement of oral communication skills exist in every learning experience and vary from informal journal club presentations to formal didactic lectures for pharmacy students. By the end of the residency year, the resident will have developed exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Mentorship
The Hazard ARH Pharmacy Department accepts students from eight colleges of pharmacy, providing the resident with ample opportunity to learn from experienced pharmacy preceptors and act as a co-preceptor. The required teaching certificate program will provide the resident with advanced skills in delivery of didactic lectures and facilitation of small group learning.
